Candidates for Tummy Tuck

Candidates for the tummy tuck procedure should be in good health, not smoke (or be willing to quit for a period of time), and have realistic goals in mind. The procedure is often performed on patients that have experienced dramatic weight loss. The main issues that abdominoplasty can address include excess skin and loose abdominal muscles.

A tummy tuck procedure isn't the most suitable treatment for excess fat. If this is a concern, we can perform liposuction alone or in conjunction with your tummy tuck. Liposuction uses a cannula to suction fat out of the abdominal area, and can further contour the body for patients that have met their weight loss goals.

"I loved the results. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner." A happy patient after trusting Dr. Baker at The Center for Cosmetic Medicine

The Tummy Tuck Treatment Timeline

Consultation

During your consultation at one of our Champaign, Decatur, or Monticello offices, also serving Peoria, IL, and surrounding areas, Dr. Baker will discuss your medical history and examine the abdominal area to determine if you are a suitable candidate for treatment.

Anesthesia

We will administer local and general anesthesia, if needed, to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

Complementary Procedures

If other procedures such as augmentation of the breasts or liposuction are being performed in combination with a tummy tuck, we will incorporate these into your surgical plan.

Incisions

To begin, we will create a horizontal incision below the bikini line. The size of the incision will depend on the severity of the loose skin. Through the incision, the extra skin is removed and the underlying abdominal muscles are stitched together and tightened to reduce bulging.

Repositioning the Belly Button

If needed, another incision is made so Dr. Baker can reposition the belly button and further improve your post-surgical results.

Completing Surgery

Your tummy tuck incision will be closed, and a temporary tube may be inserted to drain excess fluid away from the surgical site.

Why Choose a Tummy Tuck Over Liposuction?

As you've researched your plastic surgery options, you may have narrowed down your choice between a tummy tuck or liposuction. Or, you may need a bit of extra guidance to find your starting point.

While both plastic surgery options may sound similar, tummy tucks feature added benefits that you don't want to ignore. Here's a breakdown of both procedures.

Liposuction

Liposuction targets and removes body fat from different areas of the body, including the abdomen, arms, thighs, and neckline.

Unlike a tummy tuck, liposuction cannot remove loose skin or smooth out stretch marks.

Finally, like a tummy tuck, lipo is recommended for patients who have nearly reached or completed their weight loss goals.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks include fat removal through liposuction while also targeting other parts of the abdominal region.

A tummy tuck trims excess skin following dramatic weight loss. It also creates a toned appearance by repairing your disconnected stomach muscles, or fascia -- something that can benefit people who've given birth.

You Can Rely on Dr. Baker

If you can't decide between an abdominoplasty or liposuction, The Center for Cosmetic Medicine can combine a tummy tuck with liposuction to target fat cells throughout your body.

Dr. Stuart Baker wants to improve your self-confidence. You deserve to feel proud of your figure. He can help by expertly smoothing, toning, and revitalizing your body using advanced plastic surgery techniques at our three Illinois locations.

How Can I Maintain My Tummy Tuck Results?

After your recovery, you will likely have a toned and smoothed new figure. Once you look good (and feel good too), you'll want to ensure that your new figure stays trim.

You can maintain your new results with the following lifestyle changes:

  • Drinking water
  • Exercising regularly, including heart-healthy, fat-burning activities like cardio
  • Eating healthy, well-proportioned meals
  • Abstaining from alcohol consumption or limiting your intake

Of course, please wait until you're medically cleared before working out, or even doing light housework. Your recovery and well-being should always come first.

Tummy Tuck Side Effects

The most common side effects of this procedure include discomfort, swelling, bruising, itching, and tightness of the skin. We will prescribe pain medication to reduce discomfort, and patients are advised to rest as much as possible in the days after surgery to reduce the severity of other side effects. Most patients feel much better two weeks after surgery, though it may take two or three months to completely recover.
