What Is Breast Asymmetry?
It's normal and common for women to have some asymmetry, or difference, between their breasts. Although some degree of asymmetry is normal, when asymmetry is noticeable, it can cause insecurity.
The breasts may be asymmetrical in a couple of ways. For some women, the breasts may be different in size, with one breast larger than the other. The breast may also be asymmetrical in position, meaning one breast may sag or droop more.
Breast asymmetry can fluctuate throughout a woman's life. Puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight gain or loss can all impact the breasts, sometimes causing the breasts to appear asymmetrical.
What Causes Breast Asymmetry?
Some degree of breast asymmetry is fairly common and often unnoticeable. However, some women may have significantly asymmetrical breasts that may be caused by one or more of the following:
- Genetics: A woman may have breast asymmetry due to genetics.
- Congenital issues: Congenital issues, such as unilateral juvenile hypertrophy, can cause the breasts to develop differently, sometimes leading to asymmetry.
- Changes in weight: Fluctuations in weight, such as weight gain and weight loss, can affect the appearance of the breasts and may cause one breast to become a different size or sag more than the other.
- Pregnancy: Pregnancy causes many changes to the body, including the breasts. Hormonal fluctuations and weight gain typically cause the breasts to become larger during pregnancy. This can result in one breast becoming noticeably larger than the other.
How Can Breast Augmentation Help?
Women who are unhappy with breast asymmetry, specifically women who have one breast that is a different size than the other, can often achieve even, symmetrical breasts with breast augmentation.
When performing breast augmentation on asymmetrical breasts, a larger breast implant is placed into the smaller breast in an effort to match it in size to the other breast.
If the patient wants both breasts enlarged, different sized implants will be placed in each breast to accommodate for the difference in breast size. By using different sized breast implants, breast augmentation can help correct asymmetry for a more uniform appearance.
