Who is a candidate for breast augmentation surgery?
A good candidate for a breast augmentation procedure is a healthy woman who has reached her full growth (that is, not a teenager who is still growing). Beyond that criterion, there are many reasons why a woman might seek breast augmentation (enlargement):
- To make her breasts larger to be in proportion to the rest of her body
- Because large breasts are often considered more feminine than small breasts
- Because her breasts are under-developed
- Because her breasts differ in size
- Because her breasts have changed due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or age
These are all appropriate reasons for considering a breast augmentation. However, there are a few reasons for wanting to enlarge one's breasts that are not appropriate, and Dr. Baker encourages you to think about these:
- To look like a celebrity or a model
- As an attempt to save a marriage or relationship
- Because you think that it will be the answer to all of your problems
- Someone else wants you to do it
- With larger breasts, you think your life will get better
- To compete with another woman
- To improve your career
You can discuss your innermost feelings about breast augmentation with Dr. Baker, whatever those feelings, desires, and expectations may be. Your consultation with him is completely confidential, and Dr. Baker is a compassionate and caring individual in addition to being a very experienced cosmetic surgeon. If you are a resident of the Decatur, Champaign, or Springfield, Illinois area and you are considering breast augmentation surgery, please contact Stuart Baker, M.D. to arrange a private appointment.
What can I expect during and after breast augmentation surgery?
There are several breast augmentation procedures that differ depending on the type of incision, surgical technique, and breast implant used. Dr. Baker will determine which procedure is best for you based on your unique circumstances; a complete discussion of your options and desires will be part of your consultations with him. Dr. Baker is affiliated with several Champaign and Springfield, Illinois-area hospitals offering breast augmentation surgery facilities, and an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia can be performed there. The procedure takes approximately 1-1/2 hours per breast.
The incision is made under the breast, or around the nipple. A saline-filled implant is inserted under the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscles in the chest. When the implant is in place and has been checked, the incision is stitched closed.
During recovery from breast augmentation surgery, a woman can expect to experience some swelling and soreness, breast sensitivity, and possibly temporary decreased sensation in her nipples. Most or all of these side effects will subside as the breasts heal. This usually takes about three to six weeks.
