Reduce Pain and Improve Confidence with Breast Reduction Surgery By Stuart Baker on December 17, 2014

Female with full, proportionate breastsMost women are unhappy with their body in some way, and in many cases, their complaints are focused on the breasts. Of course, in many of these situations, women are unhappy because they believe that the breasts are too small, but this is not always the case. Some women have an overabundance of breast tissue. A breast reduction can minimize the size of the breasts so that they are shapely, perky, and in better proportion with the rest of the body. Plastic surgeon Stuart Baker discusses which of his Decatur patients are breast reduction candidates and how this procedure may be beneficial to those with overly large breasts.

Why Get a Breast Reduction?

To those women with naturally small breasts, or even those with well-proportioned full breasts, it can be difficult to understand why a woman would want a breast reduction. While large breasts may seem ideal, it is not just the size of the breasts that is important, but also the size of the breasts in relation to the rest of the body. If the breasts are large and heavy, but the framework of the body is small, significant discomfort may result. A breast reduction can improve the shape of the breasts and create more ideal proportions to the body in order to relieve patients of the physical and emotional pain that is often associated with large, dense breasts.

Breast Reduction Candidates

Any woman who feels uncomfortable with the size of her breasts and is in good overall health is a potential candidate for breast reduction surgery. However, in most cases, patients who choose to undergo breast reduction surgery are doing so for more than simply cosmetic purposes. In many cases, these overly large breasts result in significant physical pain and emotional discomfort. Patients who have experienced any of the following due to breast size are likely to be ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery:

  • Physical limitations or difficulty performing certain activities
  • Back, neck, and/or shoulder pain
  • Loose breast skin and/or downward pointed nipples
  • Difficulty finding clothes and/or bras that fit properly
  • Indentations from bra straps digging into the skin
  • Rash or irritation on the skin beneath the breasts
  • Emotional discomfort and embarrassment

Dr. Baker can reduce the size of the breasts for these patients and create more even body proportions to eliminate excess weight from the bust line, while maintaining (or likely improving) breast shape. By undergoing breast reduction surgery, these patients can experience relief from the physical ailments of heavy, dense breasts and can also improve self-confidence as they begin to feel more comfortable in their own body.
